Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and it’s gained popularity as a top sport in the United States as well over the past couple decades. The founding of Major League Soccer in the early 90’s and the subsequent growth of the league has given American soccer fans top-level soccer right in their back yards. That said, it’s still really the big international competitions such as the World Cup and Champions League that really brings out the big American soccer bettors.
On this page I will provide you with all of the information you need to get started betting on soccer from here in the United States. Below I’ve outlined the best 3 sportsbooks for American players, explained the most popular bets you can make on a soccer match and ended the page with a straight forward 3 step guide you can follow to get your soccer bets placed online within minutes.

Popular Soccer Bets
Below I will explain the two most popular wagers made on soccer matches (1×2 and total goals).
1×2 (3-Way Betting)
This bet is simply wagering on the final outcome of the game. The 1×2 indicates the three outcomes that can occur in a soccer match. Team 1 wins, Team 2 wins, or the match ends in a draw (x). This type of wager is also often simply referred to as the money line, or 3-way betting because of the 3 possible outcomes.
The sportsbook will set odds for each of the three possible outcomes. The American odds format indicates either how much you must wager to win $100 if the odds begin with a (-), or how much you would win with a $100 wager if the odds begin with a (+). Here’s an example:
- Egypt +500
- Uruguay -169
- Draw +275
In this example Uruguay is favored to win the game and you would have to wager $169 to win $100 betting on Uruguay. The other two outcomes are less than 50% likely. You would win $500 betting $100 on Egypt if they pulled off the upset, or you would win $275 betting $100 on a draw if the match ended without a winner.
Total Goals (Over/Under)
The other popular soccer wager is betting on the total number of goals scored in a game. The total includes the goals scored by both teams in the match. Here is the over/under of the Iceland vs Argentina match from the World Cup:
- Over 2.5 -115
- Under 2.5 -105
A $115 bet on the over would win $100 if there are 3 or more goals scored in the match.
A $105 bet on the under would win $100 if there are 2 or fewer goals scored in the match.
